Volkswagen Dinner @ MoMA

Volkswagen at MoMA

Happy Spring! All of us at Bernhard Link Theatrical had a very busy time wrapping up our last year. We finished off December working with Van Wyck & Van Wyck to unveil the annual Pirelli 2012 calendar. This year Pirelli decided to throw an elegant black tie dinner gala for its launch at the Park Avenue Armory. BLT provided the custom stage for renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli's surprise performance. We also headed down to Miami with Van Wyck where we installed an outdoor, star-studded event that marked the grand opening of the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort.

Also kicking off our new year were projects for Macy's and Volkswagen. We were proud to fully produce the Macy*s (a sponsor of the American Heart Assoc.) Go Red For Women event dedicated to bringing awareness of heart disease to millions of women. For Volkswagen we built an elegant press event and cocktail reception at MoMA, that we converted into a banquet dinner in under ten minutes. Each custom made dinner table used was designed to be uplit from the inside to illuminate plexi tops. Our lighting in the adjacent outside garden further enhanced the atmosphere for exclusive guests.

BLT Crew Led by our

Senior Production Mgr. Tom Williams

During February's New York Fashion Week BLT was once again the exclusive provider of scenic elements for the Theatre venue in the Tent Complex at Lincoln Center for IMG Fashion. A big thanks to our hard working crew, who worked tirelessly around the clock, bringing to life the tent venue that always provides fantastic diverse sets and runways.

We were very busy with Fashion in many other venues throughout the city as well. Teaming up with 373-NY, we built the scenery for Scott Sternberg's Band of Outsider's line. The theme of this show suggested the American Southwest, for which we constructed a three-dimensional, carved foam rock formation that we carefully hand-painted. Across town at the Park Avenue Armory, we joined forces with lighting designer, Jan Kroeze, to launch Tommy Hilfiger's collection. Over at St. John's Studios we worked in conjunction with Bureau Betak for the Helmut Lang and Derek Lam shows. For this venture we designed and built a fabric covered light box, which was suspended over the stage and used as the focal point for their show. Our lighting design for the Philosophy show at Avery Fisher Hall was a featured article in the Journal of Japan Association of Lighting Engineers & Designers, written by Yuke Nakase. We wrapped up a very busy Fashion Week with Proenza Schouler at the Kamco Warehouse, building a show that heavily relied on our featured NIVOflex flexible platform system. This transformed the warehouse into the producer's vision of an industrial chic space for the cutting-edge collection to be launched.

We just finished up another busy Bridal Fashion season. Once again we teamed up with The Knot & WeddingChannel to launch their luxury bridal fashion experience at the Intercontinental Hotel. Additionally, we were at Kleinfeld's where we provided all staging, lighting and sound for collections presented by Dennis Basso, Mark Zunino, Henry Roth, and Isaac Mizrahi. Aside from our fashion projects last month, our in-house lighting designers worked with British producer, NP+Co at Cedar Lake to present Bombay Sapphire's House of Imagination. And just this past week we once again provided the scenery, lights and audio components for Parson's Graduation Gala at Pier 60, where we also installed the International Center of Photography's annual exhibit at Pier 60 the very next day.

SPRING FASHION 2012 (READY-TO-WEAR)

We have been very busy here at Bernhard Link Theatrical since our last newsletter, coming off of the heels of yet another amazing and eventful Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. We were thrilled to see the triumphant return of Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion: New York, at the Manhattan Center's Grand Ballroom. It was a pleasure working with the Gen Art design team. Together we created a lighting look that complimented the innovative styles that were presented. More exciting shows going on at multiple venues throughout the city included Jason Wu, Proenza Schuler, Altuzarra, Akris at Saks Fifth Avenue, Concept Korea, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Ralph Lauren, Rodarte, and Helmut Lang among others.

This season BLT continued to team up with some of the industry's most established fashion houses, as well as cutting-edge designers, revealing their newest lines for Spring 2012. We continue to be the provider of scenic elements for the Theatre venue in the tent complex at Lincoln Center for IMG Fashion. Scenic ventures and applications that stood out included: Tommy Hilfiger's herringbone floor and custom decorative wooden oak arch; Lacostes' white-on-white fabric covered runway and matching benches; Michel Kors' reed fencing drop with sunrise backlighting and burlap flooring, which made for a very green/natural look; and Chado Ralph Rucci's bright white floor and upstage mirror wall producing an almost ethereal light experience. Others included Diane Von Furstenberg, Badgley Mischka, Carolina Herrera, Narciso Rodriguez, Monique Lhuillier, BCBG Max Azria, Anna Sui, Herve Leger by Max Azria, Betsey Johnson, and once again the season finale of Project Runway!

Lacoste Spring 2012
Michael Kors Spring 2012
This year's Fashion's Night Out (FNO) included teaming up with Van Wyck & Van Wyck to produce two fashion shows at the Ann Taylor flagship store. This amazing event included a special live performance by Natasha Bedingfield and live DJ. Over at Macy's Herald Square Tommy Hilfiger kicked off his celebrations with a live performance by Joss Stone. Scenic, sound, and lighting were all produced and designed in-house by BLT, in conjunction with Macy's design team. This made for a very exciting evening all around.

OCTOBER BRIDAL

As always, the month of October brings with it Bridal Fashion. Numerous events, ranging from the massive Wedding Channel Couture Show at the Intercontinental Hotel, to stand alone events at in individual designer showrooms, kept us busy during the Bridal Season.

YEAR END

Following the Ready-to-Wear and Bridal Fashion seasons, our

production managers were very busy delivering results to clients from initial concept through completion. Recent projects include working with Tiffany & Co. to create the setting for the "New Collection," at their store on Fifth Avenue. This involved turning the fifth floor meeting room into four separate spaces, each with its own motif and well crafted atmosphere. Each included its own custom crafted floor,

Victoria's Secret After Party
including dark parquet wood and faux concrete tile finishes. In November we lit the star-studded MoMA Film Benefit: A Tribute to Pedro Almodovar with Jan Kroeze and KCD for Chanel. At the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show After Party (The Dream Hotel) our lighting team took an innovative approach utilizing the unique features of the hotel. We focused our lighting so that it projected 360 degrees around and into the overhead, glass bottom pool. The result was a ceiling of filtered, natural moving light which created a glistening wash that filled the cocktail reception with an interesting underwater effect.

BLT most recently joined forces with Taylor Creative, Inc. for two Lands' End shows. The first, "Canvas," was a party premiering their Spring/Summer 2012 collection at Highline Stages. We lit the entire space that encompassed styled mannequin sets, a stage for the band, step and repeat wall, photo booth, ping-pong competitions, and a wall on which guests were encouraged to paint and fill the canvas themselves. The second event at Center 548, also showcased their new season and was also a huge success. Other notable projects include a shopping event for Lucky Magazine, The Limited's Design Studio Presentation, the Carlisle Look Book Shoot, and A Night of Stars and Fashion presented by Fashion Group International.

Fashion Fall 2011

We had another immensely successful Fashion Week.  The Theater has offered us numerous opportunities to improve our processes and protocols for handling multiple show venues. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and all of the off site Fashion Week shows, have also given us the chance to work with some very exotic materials and to find new uses for standard materials and techniques.

TomatTHAs Designers, such as Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste and Michael Kors, become more aware of the possiblilities, we are constantly being challenged by designers to find new materials to use in conventional and unconventional ways, in order to provide the aesthetic demanded by the industry.  Our new shop has allowed us to be more responsive to the ever increasing demands of the Fashion Industry, as far as scenery and lighting are concerned and we look forward to learning and expanding, even more.

Volkswagen at MoMA
